Western Australian Landscape

Royalties for Regions

Royalties for Regions is an historic agreement that underlines the State Government’s long-term focus on regional development throughout Western Australia.

Through Royalties for Regions, the equivalent of 25 per cent of the State’s mining and
onshore petroleum royalties will be returned to the State’s regional areas each year as an additional investment in projects, infrastructure and community services. In 2011-12, record investment in regional Western Australia has continued with $1.2 billion budgeted for Royalties for Regions. The money is being distributed through three funds:

  • the Country Local Government Fund
  • the Regional Community Services Fund.
  • the Regional Infrastructure and Headworks Fund (including the Regional Grants Scheme)

State Budget 2011-12

The Nationals in Government are working hard to ensure regional Western Australians receive their fair share of the wealth they generate. We've done this by delivering the most unique and extensive regional development programme in the nation. Since Royalties for Regions was created in 2008, The Nationals in Government have secured $6.1 billion for new projects to make regional WA a better place to live, work and invest.

Key initatives of the Royalties for Regions program in 2011-12 include:

Regional Health
Access to health care is a major concern for many people in regional WA. That's why we're investing more than $1 billion over five years to upgrade health services and facilities and to address doctor shortages in regional areas. The new $538 million Southern Inland Health initiative will boost funding for District Hospitals; regional aged and dementia care; and telehealth. The Patient Assisted Travel Scheme, Royal Flying Doctor Service, St John Ambulance Service and Regional Men's Health will continue to benefit from Royalties for Regions funding.

Regional Schools
Regional schools will benefit from $100.5 million in funding over the next four years for new and upgraded facilities. A further $51.9 million over four years from 2011-12 will provide upgrades at regional residential colleges, giving regional students more study options, closer to home.

Regional Skills and Training
With strong growth predicted in WA, it's important to ensure we have the skills to take advantage of economic opportunities. This initiative will provide $136 million over four years for student accomodation; Indigenous trainees; trade workshops; upgrading regional work camps and improving access to training to address critical skills shortages.

SuperTowns
WA's population is set to double over the next 40 years. To help regional communities in the southern half of Western Australia plan and prepare for this growth, Royalties for Regions is investing in SuperTowns. SuperTowns encourages communities to undertake projects that cater for population expansion and stimulate economic growth.
