The Nationals WA are ramping up their fight for a stronger, more prosperous Western Australia, unveiling the next round of local champions set to contest the 2025 State election.
Seven candidates were preselected by The Nationals State Council today, including key regional seats of Albany, Kalgoorlie and Kimberley, alongside four further metropolitan seats.
State President Julie Freeman welcomed the newly endorsed candidates, including former Nationals MP for Geraldton, Ian Blayney, who has recently moved to Perth and will contest Forrestfield for The Nationals.
“As the former Member for Geraldton from 2008 to 2021, and a former Shadow Minister, Ian is an experienced community leader and has been a strong voice for some of WA’s most important industries like agriculture, forestry and fisheries,” Ms Freeman said.
“The Nationals are delighted to have Ian Blayney returning to the fold bringing his breadth of experience to a formidable group of candidates from right across our great State.” Ms Freeman said.
The Nationals’ newly endorsed candidates include:
- Albany: Scott Leary
- Bicton: Bill Koul
- Forrestfield: Ian Blayney
- Kalgoorlie: Tony Herron
- Kimberley: Millie Hills
- Nedlands: James McLagan
- South Perth: Jeremy Miles
Leader Shane Love praised the lineup of local champions who would be fighting for their communities at the 2025 State election.
“From the Great Southern to the Kimberley and right throughout Perth, we have people who care about the real issues and know how to fight for what matters – like health, housing, and the cost-of-living crisis,” he said.
“Millie Hills is an unwavering advocate for her community having first put her hand up to join our Team in 2021.
A proud Bunuba-Kija woman and chairwoman of the Yuri Yungi Aboriginal Medical Service in Halls Creek, Millie is a powerful voice and would be an asset to the State’s Parliament.”
“The addition of James McLagan as our candidate for Nedlands is a tremendous boost for our team. James is dedicated to his community and the industries which drive our State forward. He has a practical and steady approach to all he does.”
Mr Love also highlighted the calibre of the regional candidates in the key seats of Albany and Kalgoorlie.
“A trusted leader in the business community and director of Albany City Motors, it’s fantastic to see Scott Leary bring his passion and enthusiasm for the Great Southern to The Nationals,” Mr Love said
“Scott has always put his community first, and the electorate of Albany now has a chance to elect a local champion from the Nationals WA team.”
“As president of the Kalgoorlie branch of the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia, Tony Herron has taken a stand against Labor’s misguided firearms laws, and as a local operations manager linked to the resources sector, he has a strong understanding of one of WA’s most important fields.
“Our team has grown today, and it will continue to do so. We’re a party led by common sense which puts community first and if people reading this at home think they could stand up for their community, for a better WA, they should.
Mr Love said The Nationals WA team had a practical suite of polices which reflect the real needs of West Australians
“We’re the only Party with a bold plan to abolish stamp duty for first home buyers, giving 20,000 young families the break they need.
“We’re also committed to cutting payroll tax, extending trading hours, and investing $276 million to improve road safety.
“And while Labor scrambles to fix the mess in health and housing, we’re stepping up with a $500 million commitment to improve regional health outcomes, and $10,000 HomeBuilder Relief Payments to help families battling construction delays which are beyond their control.
“And we’re the only Party standing up against Labor’s firearms laws.
“Put simply, we’re ready.”
“West Australians deserve a Government which is upfront and puts them first. That’s exactly what you get from The Nationals WA and its exactly what you’ll get from my team in Government in 2025.”
