The Nationals WA have secured a commitment from the Minister for Transport that the State Government will guarantee the continuation of regional flight routes currently serviced by Rex Airlines, following news that Regional Express Airlines (Rex) has been sold.
During Question Time in Parliament this week, Shadow Tourism Minister Scott Leary MLA sought assurances from Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, who confirmed the Cook Labor Government would guarantee the ongoing operation of the Monkey Mia, and Carnarvon routes while the transition from Rex Airlines to US-based aviation company Air T takes place.
“This announcement brings welcome relief for Gascoyne families, businesses and patients who depend on Rex for essential travel along with tourists to the region.” Mr Leary said.
“The past year has exposed how fragile our regional air links can be when contracts are mismanaged and accountability is lacking.
“The sale and recapitalisation of Rex provides an opportunity to reset and rebuild trust with regional Western Australians.”
Leader of The Nationals and Member for Mid-West Shane Love said it was now crucial that the Cook Labor Government worked closely with the new owners to ensure regional air services are both reliable and affordable.
“This sale cannot simply be a change of ownership on paper — it must deliver meaningful improvements for passengers,” he said.
Mr Love said the Nationals would continue to advocate for transparency and accountability in regional air services.
“The Gascoyne deserves dependable connections to the city and beyond.
“We’ll continue to hold the Government to account to make sure this transition leads to a stronger, more reliable service for both Carnarvon and Monkey Mia,” he said.
