The Nationals WA have welcomed the news that western rock lobster exports will soon resume to
China following an agreement reached between the Federal Government and China to lift the trade
embargo.
Leader of The Nationals WA, Shane Love MLA, expressed his support for the reopening of the
market, acknowledging the significance of the western rock lobster industry to the WA economy.
“The lifting of the ban on western rock lobster imports is a massive win for WA crayfishers, who have
endured significant hardship since the trade restrictions were introduced several years ago,” Mr Love
said.
“The Nationals WA have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the industry throughout this challenging
period, consistently calling for the Federal Government to secure a resolution.
“Western rock lobster is WA’s most valuable fishery, contributing approximately $400 million annually
to the State’s economy.”
Mr Love said the return of exports to China could not come at a better time.
“This announcement ensures WA lobster will once again feature on menus in China in time for
Chinese New Year celebrations.
“It’s a welcome outcome for both the industry and the many Mid West communities that rely on the
economic benefits of the lobster fishery,” Mr Love said.
Nationals WA candidate for Geraldton, Kirrilee Warr, also welcomed the news, noting the importance
of the industry to coastal communities right across WA.
“The western rock lobster industry is the lifeblood of many coastal towns, including Geraldton, and
this decision will bring much-needed relief to local fishers and businesses that depend on the trade,”
Ms Warr said.
“The reopening of this key market is a huge step forward for Geraldton and the wider Mid West
region.
“The Nationals will continue to support the industry as it rebounds and looks to a long and strong
trade with China into the future,” she said.
