Member for Roe and Deputy Leader of The Nationals WA, Peter Rundle MLA welcomes upgrades to a notorious intersection in Lake Grace.
Main Roads have begun works at the intersection of Stubbs Street and Kulin Lake Grace Road in Lake Grace, a site where there have been numerous crashes and near misses.
Both sides of intersection will have high friction yellow coating, some signs will be removed and vehicle activated flashing signs will be installed later this year. The Lake Grace Shire also built new road kerbing to limit traffic from the nearby roadhouse.
While Mr Rundle welcomes the announcement, he says it took too long for the government to act, “Locals have warned of issues at the intersection for years calling for more safety measures but worried the government wouldn’t act until there was a fatality.
I am disappointed it took so long for the government to act but these upgrades will save lives. This community will be relieved to see additional safety measures in place.”
In February this year eight people escaped serious injury in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection renewing calls for the intersection to be upgraded.
Mr Rundle said, “I have listened to concerned locals, seen the frightening footage of crashes and near misses over the years, have raised it with the Minister for Transport and highlighted the issue in the media and in Parliament.
Despite a Main Roads road safety audit in 2017 and upgrades at the intersection in 2023 there continued to be near misses and crashes.”
The Road Safety Commission installed a near-miss camera at the intersection for a two month period in 2025 which recorded 634 incidents of motorists failing to comply with the existing stop sign.
Mr Rundle said, “Safety audits and camera footage should not have been ignored for years by the state government, so I commend the community members and the Shire of Lake Grace for continuing to push for upgrades.”
According to Main Roads work is expected to be finished in July.
