Member for Mid-West and Leader of The Nationals WA, Shane Love MLA, says immediate action is needed to ensure students attending Jurien Bay District High School can safely get to school.
Mr Love said at present students crossing Bashford Street – the main street of the town which forms part of Indian Ocean Drive – are not safe.
“The vast majority of the school’s 366 enrolled students who walk or cycle have to cross Bashford Street to get to school,” he said.
“While there is a traffic warden in place, motorists are not observing the speed limit and traffic wardens and students are not safe – one warden previously resigned after three near misses in a single shift.
Mr Love said in April 2025 Police made a request to Main Roads WA for the installation of flashing school zone signs at the crossing located at the intersection of Bashford Street and Bayliss Street.
“Following initial advice that flashing lights would be installed, here we are, 15 months later and the project keeps getting deferred despite a number of near misses and a recent fatality 100 metres from the school crossing site,” Mr Love said.
“This is a project that needs immediate funding for the safety of students as well as the traffic wardens in attendance.
“In its present state the Bashford Street crossing is an unacceptable risk to both students and traffic wardens.”
Mr Love said the school had previously requested that the flashing school zone lights on side streets, Hamersley Street and Bayliss Street were moved to Bashford Street but the request was ignored.
A petition demanding the immediate installation of flashing school zone signs on Bashford Street is available for signing at the Jurien Bay CRC.
