Leader of The Nationals WA Shane Love MLA has slammed the Cook Labor Government over ongoing delays to the Hamelin Pool boardwalk in Shark Bay, with the iconic tourism attraction set to remain inaccessible after being damaged by Cyclone Seroja 6 years ago.
Mr Love said he had written to the Environment Minister and has just now received a response, confirming that the tenders for the boardwalk rebuild only closed in December 2025, with construction now anticipated to be completed by the end of 2026 — subject to contractor confirmation.
The Hamelin Pool stromatolites, among the oldest living organisms on Earth and dating back more than 3.5 billion years, are a world-class natural wonder and a cornerstone of Western Australia’s tourism offering.
“Shark Bay is home to one of the most unique and scientifically significant attractions in the world, yet visitors are still unable to properly experience the stromatolites because of ongoing delays to the boardwalk,” Mr Love said.
“For a destination of this global significance, that simply isn’t good enough.”
While the State Labor Government has committed $4.6 million to rebuild the structure, Mr Love said the lack of progress and transparency around timelines was concerning.
“After years of delays, we are now being told construction may not be completed until the end of 2026,” he said.
Mr Love acknowledged the need to protect the sensitive environment and respect the cultural significance of the site but said this should not come at the cost of indefinite delays.
“There is no question this is a delicate environment that must be protected, but that cannot be used as an excuse for poor project management and drawn-out timelines,” he said.
Mr Love called on the Cook Labor Government to provide a clear and detailed timeline for the project, including key milestones and assurances that no further delays would occur.
